I have spent a lot of my days thinking about the time I don't have. Wondering if I will find minutes in the day to relax. To just be. Many times, I chose to mindlessly scroll through Instagram or watch another episode of The Office on Netflix. (You know you do too!) The fundamental problem with these choices are that they don't refill my tank. They don't make me a better person or connect me to anyone else except to cause judgement, envy, or unrealistic expectations. (I mean, I NEED that organic monotone frock to make me a better minimalist right?) Or the scrolling will numb me to the other poor choices I are making on the daily. (Were chips for dinner a good choice? If I eat them while looking at FB, I'll never know!)
Spoiler alert: You never feel better after too much tv, social media, or that bag of chips.
I've come to the conclusion that happiness (for me) is found in the little choices that I make. In the turning on a playlist and dancing to the 90s in the kitchen. In reading a book in the hammock. In sitting still and watching the steam come off my coffee. In making time for a real life coffee date. In opening the windows for the first time in the fall. In making time for things that actually matter to me. After all, it is my life to live.
So for September, I've got some simple goals. A simple, but manageable outline for taking care of myself.
I'm hoping that by having open ended goals that don't have to be checked off the list, I can find a better rhythm for my days. With the main goal of just feeling less overwhelmed. Less connected in the social media way, and more connected in a real life way.
If I've done these few things, the day can only go up from there. Right?!
